Memorial Clock Tower, 1903, to John Mercer (1791-1866: industrial
chemist, inventor of "mercerisation"), by A.H. Dunkin (Surveyor to Urban
District Council); clock by William Potts & Sons of Leeds. Sandstone
ashlar with red Scotch granite shafts and colonnettes, copper-clad dome.
Free Baroque style. Square base carrying a 2-stage domed turret. Open
base of 4 rounded arches with shafts and keystones, the corners clasped
by banded Ionic pilasters, has lettered tablets over the archies, a moulded
cornice, and a balustrade with large finials at the corners. Turret has
tall 1st stage with pilastered diagonal corners and tall narrow windows
with Gibbs surrounds; short 2nd stage has 4 clock faces, paired colonnettes
at the corners, prominent octagonal cornice, and a copper-clad dome with
louvres at the angles and a finial. (History: Louie Pollard Great
