5/118 Kiln Field Farmhouse - GV II

Farmhouse, mostly C18, with some evidence of earlier building, altered. Sandstone rubble, roofs of stone slate and some slate, gable chimneys to front range, ridge chimney to rear range. L-shaped plan: two single-depth 2-bay ranges joined at right angles. Two storeys, with projecting 2-storey porch at the junction of the elements. Front range facing east has 2-stage plinth, glazed double doors to 2nd bay, a sashed window above, 3 similar windows to 1st bay (2 at ground floor), and traces of old flush mullion windows on both floors. Left return wall has 2-storey gabled porch with large rectangular lintel, inner stone side bench and old studded board door, and small square window at 1st floor. (Single storey outbuilding continuing line of front wall partly embraces porch). Rear range has two 2-light casements on each floor, various irregular lean-to's at the left end, and in the rear wall inter alia a 3-light flush mullion window and a doorway which leads to a sunken vaulted chamber covered by a mound. Interior: thick stone walls and some beams of varied size and quality.
