School boarding house. 1889 by T G Jackson. Of coursed squared stone with ashlar
dressings, slate roof and coped gables. Leaded cupola with clock and 2 massive stone
stacks in south slope of roof. Jacobean revival style. Two storeys and attics.
Consists of main block, east wing and long range projecting to north. String course
between storeys. South front: main block has central and east end projecting gables,
mullioned and transomed windows with casement openings. East end has canted bay
window with leaded ogee semi-dome. East wing of 2 storeys, L plan with similar
windows to main block. Projecting gable at east end has 2 first floor windows of
3 cusped-headed lights with 2 transoms and hoodmoulds. North front treated
asymmetrically with gables, 2 two-storey porches, and mullioned and transomed windows,
irregularly spaced and including one partly-blocked window, perhaps to give impression
of growth over time. Two storey wing to north has 4-centred central arched entrance,
20 single-light rectangular first floor windows and similar but larger ground floor
windows, mostly set in pairs. Forms two sides of quadrangle, completed by School Room
and Science Block (qq.v.).
