House, now office. 1693, with later alterations. For
Joseph and Elizabeth Spann. Stone with slate roof. 3
storeys with attic, 3 bays. Drip moulds over ground and 1st
floors, coped gables have kneelers with finials. Ovolo
mullioned windows, those to ground floor of 6 lights, with
central king mullions. 1st floor transomed window, that to
1st bay of 2 lights, others of 6 lights with central king
mullions. 2nd floor has 3-light windows. Attic has gabled
dormers with small bull's eyes. All windows have leaded
glazing. Porch has entrance with bolection moulding, stone
above inscribed: "ISL/1693" with royal arms. Porch of 1939
re-using architrave and date stone. Rear has low wing with
C20 garage extension. Interior has ground floor with
panelling, door and fireplace said to be taken from
Chillingham Castle, Northumberland. Door has elaborate
panelling with fan to top panel, fireplace has gadroomed
mantel, the overmantel has strap work with coat of arms.
Panelling has Ionic columns and 9 smaller columns,
originally open screen with central entrance, now re-aranged
to form closed screen. Inner room has stone fireplace in
angle with pointed lintel and painted flower panel above
(covered up). 1st floor has timber cross-frame with daub
and wattle infill. Attic floor removed, roof trusses with
tie beams and collars. Former stable wing wall with some
timber framing with orignal entrances, later doors. Re-used
carved stones from other (demolished) houses in Bromborough,
one has lion, flanked by elephant and griffin. Mounting
block to front of building.
