Description

ALBION STREET 1. 5104 Hockley B1 Nos 62 to 65 (consec) SP 0587 SE 27/3 II GV 2. 1833. Architect W Tadman Foulkes. Jewellery quarter works with a tall 3 storey red brick elevation extending across 1 bays; an alternating rythm of single and paired bays but with 3 bays grouped to west end. Boldly modelled brickwork still Italianate in character but with some hint of Queen Ann revival. The elevation grid is articulated as follows: ground floor has plinth with scalloped brick panels and similarly decorated pedestals supporting banded brick pilasters up to entablature. First floor has plain pilasters rising from similar base and the second floor has squat coupled pilasters strips rising again from similarly decorated register as plinth. The brick dentil cornices between the floors and the sill bands are dressed with stone. Ashlar frieze and dominant eaves cornice. Original double panelled doors to waggon way under segmental arch to left hand; flat arched ground floor windows and entrance containing arched ashlar dressed doorway with side lights - carved work to spandrels. Tall round arched first floor windows in moulded stepped reveals with ashlar keys. The heads of the second floor windows abutt the frieze. The elevation of these works makes an important contribution to the street picture and is virtually unaltered.
