Police barracks. Circa 1880, built as a hostel. A large 3 storey and attic
building in the Birmingham Gothic idiom associated with Martin and Chamberlain.
Red brick with terracotta dressings. With even but slightly asymmetrical
distribution of bays, dominated by 3 large gables with corbelled and ribbed,
tall brick chimney shafts. The gables decorated with cut brickwork and terracotta
panels. Coupled and single pointed arched windows with roll edged reveals and
drip moulds. Those on first floor have blind tympana set in panels of terracotta
with decorative roundels. Sash windows with leaded and stained glass to top
lights. Large segmental arched courtyard entrance with double panelled doors.
Site of Cardinal Newman's first residence in the city.
