A notice nearby says:
'Constructed between 1845-7 and designed by Joseph Paxton, the Prospect Tower was used as a vantage point for the cemetery. Approaching funeral parties could be viewed from the city centre, allowing the cemetery workers time to make sure everything was in place for the funeral service. A bell was then rung to notify the cemetery that a funeral party was on its way.'
