Description

The following buildings shall be added:- NORWOOD GREEN ROAD 1. 5010 (north side) TQ 17 NW 4/97 Norwood Hall II 2. House, now college. Built 1801-2 by Sir John Soane for John Robins, auctioneer and upholsterer; altered and extended c1890. Late C19 roughcast over brick; gabled Welsh slate roof; roughcast brick stacks. Double-depth plan. Design of 2-storey facade based on Triumphal Arch theme. Central arch has steps to semi-circular arched doorway with 6-panelled (4 glazed) door and late C19 transomed window set in segmental-arched moulded stone architrave to first floor. Arch is flanked by semi-circular arched niches and blind oculi, rising to chimney stacks. Four late C19 and one C20 windows inserted into facade; attic storey is also a late C19 insertion and has open balustrade to parapet. Simi- larly arranged stacks to rear, flanking late C19 balustrade broken by C20 attic window; late C19 fenestration. Left side wall, of 3-storey, 3-window range, has late C19 leaded windows set in early C19 moulded stone architraves on ground floor. Late C19 extension to right, of 2 storeys, has irregular fenestration of stone mullioned and transomed windows and 3-storey porch with half-glazed double doors to rear. Interior: cross vaults by Soane survive in vestibule and staircase hall; ball cornice by Soane in room to rear left. Cellar has stone-flag floor, early C19 shutters, and 3 early C19 six-panelled doors. First floor has early C19 reeded six-panelled doors; reeded panelled shutters; room to right has early C19 fireplace with reeded architrave; room to left has early C19 moulded wood architraves to windows, two with panelled dados. Late C19 features include Elizabethan-style staircase with turned balusters and French-style canopied fireplace in hall; ground-floor rooms to left are panelled, and include fluted columns flanking fireplace to rear and plaster frieze and fine fireplace to left. History: Norwood Hall was built for John Robins, a supplier of furniture to Soane. The Triumphal Arch theme was used more forcefully by Soane at Aynho Park and Pitzhanger Manor.
