9/121 Gate piers, gates and
quadrant wall about
50 yards east of
Overbury Court
GV II
Gate piers, gates and quadrant walls. 1887 by Richard Norman Shaw for
Robert Martin. Limestone ashlar and wrought iron. Tall square piers with
moulded cornices, raised and moulded rectangular panels to front and rear
and surmounted by ball finials on flattened pyramidal bases. Piers are
linked by a very elaborate wrought iron archway at the centre of which is
the initial "M" and the date "1887" which have been gilded. The pair of
large gates are similarly ornate with scrolled and foliated detail. On the
outer side of each pier is a small single iron gateway each having a segmental
stone head and smaller, more simply detailed outer pier with a ball finial.
The quadrant walls have a moulded coping and are about five feet high and the
north wall curves east for about five yards and terminates in another similar
small pier. The south wall is also about five feet high, curves east for
about five yards and then runs due south for a further five yards. (Saint, A:
Richard Norman Shaw, London, 1976).
