Pair of houses, part of group of 3. c1800. Flemish bond brickwork, painted at ground floor, slate double mansard roof. 2 storeys, attic and basement, each 1 window, with blind light centred to first floor. Flat-roofed dormer with C20 casement above tripartite 4:12:4-pane sashes with mullions, but at first floor to No.39 with inserted central casement. The basement has also a tripartite sash, without bars to No.39. At the centre are flush 6-panel doors, with glazing to No.40, in a shared moulded architrave, and slight hood with moulded edge and fluted frieze, on 3 console brackets, and all on 6 stone steps. Above the ground-floor windows is a full-width fluted string, and there is a small modillion eaves cornice. Each has a gable stack, and at the rear are dormers above 12-pane sashes; there are small extensions. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: C20 railings on a stone curb to the basement areas. The pair was built as a unit of 3 with No.41 (qv), but this has different ground floor treatment. (RCHME: Dorset, South-East: London: 1970-: 348).
