Description

GREAT AMWELL HILLSIDE LANE
TL 3712 (south side)

Great Amwell village
12/33 Two statues in garden at
Magna Cottages 20 metres south-
west of house

II

2 statues. Circa C18. Portland stone. A pair of large reclining
semi-draped figures, one male and bearded, the other female.
They recline towards each other and each leans on an urn
directing the mouth forward and downward. The heads have been
removed and stand in front of the group: with them the figures
would be about 2 metres high. The backs are flat as if to be set
against a wall. The property is associated with the Mylne family
of architects and the figures may have come from a pediment or
bridge abutment designed by Robert Mylne, possibly for the New
River Company for whom he was Surveyor 1771 -1811. They may have
been meant to personify the 2 source wells of the New River, Chad
and Emma.
