House. Early C19 front to possible late C17 to early C18 core with rear extension
to east wing added in late C19. Front of red brick in Flemish bond with hipped old
tiled roof with 3 brick chimneystacks. 2 storeys; 3 windows, mainly 16-pane sashes
but 12-pane to centre. Paired bracket eaves cornice. Central doorcase with
6 panelled door, the top 2 panels glazed originally with reeded pilasters and flat
hood but with porch with chamfered piers added to it. Rear left range stuccoed and
rear right range which projects further of brown brick with red brick dressings.
Interior has staircase with stick balusters, 6 panelled doors and a C1820-30 wooden
fireplace with reeded pilasters and roundels. 2 ground floor rooms have walls hung
with canvas. One rear room has a Victorian cast iron kitchen range and fireplace,
behind this is a kitchen with 2 old iron ceiling hooks, on open fireplace and bake
oven. An opposite room has a large spine beam. The cellar has a C17 chamfered beam
and some alcoves. The 1st floor has some C16 or early C17 elm floorboards and a
rear bedroom has a fireplace with reeded pilasters and paterae. In the early
C19 the Rev Twopenny, founder of Kentish Cricket lived here and a plaque attached to
the front of the house records that Alfred Mynn (1807-1861) the great early Kent
cricketer, the greatest match winner before W G Grace lived here for a number of
years.
