Pair of cottages. c1830-40, probably by Paxton and Robertson. Coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings. Plain tile roof with overhanging decorative gables. Ashlar gable stacks with a pair and a triplet of twisted circular shafts.
Two storeys. Plain first floor band and moulded eaves cornice. North elevation of three broad bays, the two to the right double fronted. Central doorway with triangular head, ashlar surround and panelled door. Flanked by four-light chamfered mullion windows with triangular heads. Single light window above with projecting plain ashlar surround with stepped corbelling below and stepped parapet above. Flanked by three-light square section flush mullion windows. Slightly lower recessed bay to left has a two-light chamfered mullion window to ground floor and a small canted oriel above on moulded bracket and with hipped lead roof with finial. Blind round arched window to left with raised head and bracketed sill. Gabled east elevation has a lower projecting gabled bay with buttress walls with elaborate scrolled brackets above. Two-light chamfered mullion window with a similar but smaller two-light window above and a small pointed window in the pedimented gable.
Stone garden wall to north surmounted by a decorative wooden fence.
Built as part of the picturesque model village by Paxton for the Sixth Duke of Devonshire.
