GV II

Former farmhouse, enlarged to form manor house. Early C20. Late
C17 block refronted C18 with C20, C17 style block attached, built
under the patronage of Gertrude Winthrop for her son Lawrence
Johnston. Late C17 block: ashlar limestone with tiled roof.
Flat coped gables. Moulded stone eaves cornice with sundial
finial far left and vase finial far right. Continuous band over
ground floor windows. Rectangular ashlar gable end stacks. C20
block; squared limestone with limestone slate roof, with flat
coped gables with ball finials. Group of 8 octagonal stacks from
gable end to rear. C20 lead guttering to both blocks, probably by
Norman Jewson with initials G.W., (Gertrude Winthrop), dog tooth
decoration and scroll shaped brackets. Plan: C17 block with C18
facade extends back on right to form one side of a courtyard. C20
block attached rear right C17/18 block: 2 storeys and attic, lit by
3, segmental headed dormers from roof. 3-windowed: single and
twinned 12-pane sashes. Central 7-panel door in classical
surround with engaged Doric columns supporting open triangular
pediment. 3-pane light with garlanded glazing bars over. Right
wall has mullioned and transomed windows and C18 doorway with a
bolection moulded surround, broken pediment and coat of arms. C20
block has single principal gable to courtyard and twin gabled walls
to right and left. 2 storeys and attic. 3-light stone-mullioned
windows with flat hoods some mullioned and transomed windows also.
Venetian style canted oriel window in left wall. All windows in
C20 block have leaded lights.
Interior: fine C18 fireplace with black marble surround with
classical, dancing figure frieze, in front left room ground floor.
