II
National School, now school hall. 1837. Squared and coursed stone with ashlar
buttresses and dressings; welsh slate roof in steep pitch. Single free-standing unit
in six bays on one level with plain glazed lancets in double chamfer surrounds,
grouped triple lancets in north and south gables. Plat buttresses with double
offset. Small pointed doorway, left, with rich decoration including chevron,
dog-tooth, and ball flower, reputed to be from Kingswood Abbey (no documentary
evidence) and largely rebuilt. Gables with flat stone copings, and floriated apex
cross north end only. Later small unit at right angles linked to south end.
Plain interior, new dropped ceiling. Three small niches, possibly book cupboards, in
west wall.
