Description

The following building shall be added to the list:

ST 8992 TETBURY

8/10 BATH ROAD
No. 6 (The Old
GV Toll House)

II

Tollhouse, now cottage. Mid C18. Cotswold stone rubble with some dressed
stone to openings, Cotswold stone roof. Two bay direct entry single depth
house. Gothic style. Two storeys, two windows, pointed heads. Central
gabled porch a modern alteration, blind pointed niche above. Gable stack to
right. Modern windows to side and rear.

History. This cottage apparently built c1750-60 but the architectural
character appears to be rather later. The road was turnpiked in 1743 but the
new bridge built in 1775 must have made the use of this cottage rather
difficult and it was superceded in 1821. It is unusual to have two toll
houses surviving so close to each other.
