5/45 The Old Post Office and adjoining
former smithy (formerly listed on
4.6.52 Cirencester Road as "Smithy")

Formerly post office now detached house, on corner. Probably
mid/late C17. Random coursed rubble stone, stone slate roof with
stone end stacks, partly external to right, and rear wing to left
with slate roof and brick end stack. Single front range and 2 rear
ranges, 2 storeys. Two windows, 2-light leaded wooden casements
with timber lintel and tall expanse of blind wall above. Three-
light metal C20 window on ground floor to right, single light to
left. Door to left of centre with recessed C20 door and wrought-
iron porch front with metal roof. Right hand return on line of
external stack has leaded 2-light stone mullion and transom on each
floor to rear, and small single storey wing, originally higher, at
back of this range. Single storey wing to left was originally
smithy and still contains a hearth, now a garage. Bus shelter
formed in link unit between house and smithy.
