5/168 Walled garden of Fretherne Lodge,
about 80m to north east of house
GV II
Walled garden. Early C19. Brick walls with plain stone coping,
enclosing a rectangular area approximately 50m by 30m, with shallow
projecting plain buttresses and corner piers. On east and west
sides (long sides) wall sweeps down in height from approximately
3.5m to 2.5m, rising again in centre to form small feature with
inset pointed arch recess, on outer side. On north side, sweeps up
again in corner nearest drive to Fretherne Lodge (q.v.) to form
small parapet in front of small brick building with stack on north
wall which projects outwards towards road, possibly a summerhouse.
Wooden lattice gate on south side links with path to house. This
is a complete walled garden in good state of repair and forming an
important roadside feature almost adjacent to the Church of St Mary
(q.v).
