Large country house. c1620; c1850 alterations by Thomas
Full james. Extensively altered 1874-8 by Alfred Waterhouse for
E.A. Leatham; 1914 alterations and service wing by Andrew Russell
for Capt. F.N.H. Wills. Rebuilding of east wing after 1919 fire by
Edwin Lutyens. Ashlar and coursed rock-faced rubble limestone;
ashlar chimneys; stone slate roof. Two-storey with attic; small
west and large east wings. South front: main part to left is
symmetrical, remodelled by Full james and Waterhouse. Central
gabled 2-storey rectangular bay window with attic on position of
original porch. Full moulded parapet gable with finial to each end
of elevation; 2-storey canted bay window to each with crenellated
parapet. Two similar lower 2-storey bays to inner part of
elevation with small gable above attic window to main elevation
behind. Fenestration of mullioned and transomed casements with
continuous drip courses. C19 rebuilt ridge-mounted chimneys with
moulded caps. Range extended to right is C19 with rock-faced
rubble elevation having 2 full moulded gables and mullioned and
transomed fenestration. Five-bay classical arcade to ground floor
added by Lutyens has Tuscan columns and keystones to arch
architraves. Parapet gable end of east library wing projects
forward to right with mullioned and transomed fenestration to
ground and upper floors; small west-facing gable has 2-light
attic casement; two 2-light mullioned attic casements to south-
facing gable, all very plain and unmoulded. East end: main gable
end in rock-faced rubble with mullioned and transomed fenestration.
To left is side of Lutyens addition in ashlar with several small 2-
light casements set at stair landing positions; simple Tudor
arched doorway at cellar level. Mullioned and transomed casements
to service wing. North front: greatly altered during C19
rebuilding. Lower part of central 2-storey parapet gabled porch
retains C17 doorway with pedestal-mounted Corinthian pilasters,
Doric entablature and low-relief strapwork above continuous drip
course. Chimney with 3 diagonal shafts having moulded caps also
appears C17. Panel with carved coat-of-arms above doorway and
flanking trefoil-headed casements are C19. Large mullioned and
transomed stair window to left and exterior of north west wing to
right are by Waterhouse, wing having 2-storey canted bay window.
Service wing projects forward to left with prominent mullioned and
transomed oriel window. Many cast-iron rainwater heads dated
MCMXIV with monogram N H W.
Interior: little remains from C17 house, the stone hall fireplace
being main exception with paired Composite columns to fireplace
and chimneypiece above, divided into 2 panels with Sandys' family
arms. Panelling with strapwork and Ionic pilasters installed in
1914, elaborate Jacobean style plaster ceiling also of this date.
Staircase by Waterhouse has turned balusters and fluted square
newels. Rooms in west wing in elaborate Edwardian classical style.
Linenfold panel.ling to dining room and very large fireplace by
Waterhouse. Simpler fielded panelling in library by Lutyens with
integral bookstacks jutting out at right-angles. Central coved
Jacobean-style plaster ceiling; outer part of ceiling with plain
scrubbed oak joists. House stands in C20 formal garden. Lodge and
gateway to west (q.v.).
