GV II

Two houses and shops in row, and third dwelling set back in narrow courtyard.
Late C17 or early C18 but much modified in C19. Smooth rendered to modillioned
eaves cornice. Some timber framework and painted brickwork to No 18 raised
quoins to first floor in front, concrete tile to coped gables on kneelers,
ridge of No 18 return wing rises above main cross ridge, remains of large stone
stack in courtyard; also behind no 18 is two storey exotic early C19
veranda with flat-topped gable with incised decoration, umbrella hood central
on four slender wrought-iron supports with balustrade over deep entablature
to upper veranda edge carried on 'Egyptian' columns in antis with impost blocks,
back wall to lower veranda with 2 sashes flanking C20 door. Street front 2½
storeys, 3 hipped dormers over 5 cross-mullioned plain glass casements, the
mullions and transomes being flush with outer wall face, over canted sunk
plate glass C19 shop front left and late C20 shop front right with central
door with elliptical head to large glass upper panel, fielded below. Centrally
a through-way to courtyard. No 16 set back includes good 6-panel door in
heavy plain surround with dentilled cornice, and a further through-way down
steps bottom right. Inside No 18 at head of steps is a wide and heavy
plank door in a moulded surround. The front of the property has been heavily
modified but the original forms remain, and the whole group has much architectural
interest.
