SNOWSHILL SNOWSHILL VILLAGE
SP 0833-0933
12/47 Garden Wall and Lodges
to south of Snowshill Manor
GV II
Garden wall, 2 former stables, now entrance shop and W.C., gateway
between. C17, C18, early C19. Coursed squared stone, changing
to squared stone brought to courses, ashlar top to wall, small,
squared stone to lodges, stone slate roofs, ashlar wall between.
Long wall from Manor House between garden and road, 2 single-bay
buildings at right angles with gateway between. Wall viewed from
garden: plinth for about 27m, blocked doorway near house, evidence
of former stepped top to wall (clearer on road side). Two-course,
ridged stone top. Top ramps down slightly at 4 points; two lean-
to buttresses just before gateposts. Wall changes construction at
about 27m from house, angle slightly at 31m, ends at 52m, where
returns 2m to first lodge. Lodges viewed from outside garden: on
right garden wall returns to rear corner of lodge. Boarded door
with timber lintel on left of front. To left ashlar wall,
slightly projecting pier, each end, plain plinth, doorway with
stone lintel centre, bottom half door boarded, upper half
diagonally-set bars. Above plain coping, quadrant up to end
piers, each with weathered cap. Similar building to left, but
with stone lintel to doorway. Important features in garden and
street scene: forms group with Manor House, Manor Cottages and
Church (all q.v.).
