Late C17, late C19. A palatial house with regular elevations on 3 sides, the fourth
side being masked by substantial additions in matching style. The main (north-east)
front is of 2 storeys, attic and basement, the old part being symmetrical, of 2.1.2
windows. Hipped tile roof, 2 flat-roofed dormers (with sashes), large fully-moulded
modillion cornice, formed with a pediment above the slightly-projecting centrepiece.
Brick walling in Flemish bond (red with blue headers), red rubbed flat arches
incorporating carved stone keystones, stone cills, plain stone first-floor band,
moulded stone step to the plinth, chamfered quoins to sides and centrepiece. Sashes in
exposed frames (with interior folding shutters), the central first-floor window has an
eared architrave with carved swags at top and sides. The later projecting brick porch
has stone dressings; cornice, frieze and plinth mouldings, the keystone of the doorway
architrave having the raised letters SB and the date 1886. To the east the late C19
wing steps back in 3 stages, the nearest of 3 windows (and one large dormer) and all
the details of the old front, the next slightly plainer of one above 3 windows, and
then a large set back to provide service entrances. The symmetrical north-west
elevation is of 5 windows (2 dormers), with hipped tile roof, the same cornice, rubbed
flat arches, French ground-floor windows; the south side has a 2-bay projecting unit of
later date. The south-west elevation is of 2.1.2 windows, with a slightly-recessed
centre containing a tall round-headed (staircase) window above a round-headed doorway
(glazed) of the same width, 2 dormers in the tile roof, cornice, rubbed flat arches,
French windows. To the east is the later wing, of 4.3 windows of similar style but
lesser height. There are tall stacks of the late period and one old panelled stack
above the north-west front.
