MILITARY ROAD 1. 5231 Wallington ------------- Fort Wallington SU 5806 3/117 SU 50 NE 21/117 II 2. Circa 1860. 1 of a series of forts built for the defence of Portsmouth Harbour during Lord Palmerston's 2nd Ministry, at the time of a scare about possible war with France. Eastern part now (1974) demolished and all other earthworks except south facing curtain wall were levelled by road works for the M27 motorway. Built within the hillside with a pointed, or tooth-shaped projection in the centre. Faced with red brick. An earth band above with stone coping. The flanking portions have a castellated parapet. Beyond, are plain blank portions each containing a round-headed "Norman" doorway with flanking stone columns (1 missing) and stone soffit and dripstone above. Flat arched and segmental arched windows.
