2/46 Powell memorial about 5 metres
south of tower of Church of
St Mary

GV II

Chest tomb. Late C18. Signed by E Kyte of Hay (on Wye). Ashlar. Greek
Revival sarcophagus on 4 feet, on a plinth of 3 steps; corner finials,
shallow pyramidal cap. Rectangular inscription panels within fluted
surrounds. Inscription: "To the Memory of John Powell second Son/ of Louisa
Powell, who departed this life/ on the 20th day of May 1796, Aged 26 years/
He was at the early aged of 26 appointed/ Surgeon to His Majesty's Forces in
the/ West Indies; and was seized with the yellow/ fever during the attack of
the Iseand (sic)/ of St Domingo, to which he fell a victim". Also inscriptions
on other faces. This is a good example of stone masonry and enhances the
setting of the church; it contributes to the group value of the other memorials
in the churchyard.
