STATION ROAD 1. 5253 (South Side) Nos 96 and 98 TL 4869 1503:2/11 II GV 2. C17 or earlier 1½ storey house (No 98) at right angles to road facing E. Early C18 2 storey house (No 96) in front parallel with road facing N. C18,1 bay half hipped extension to S end of C17 house. Mid C18, 2 storey extension of No 96 to W with tiled roof. All the rest thatched. Timber framing of 3 periods. Plastered generally but weatherboarding to S end of No 98, W end of No 96 and the Gd floor front, W of the central lean-to tiled porch. Large internal chimney stack at junction of Nos 96 and 98. Former internal gable stack at W end of thatched older part of No 96. N front symmetrical thatched part with 2 windows to each floor. 1st floor has 3 light wooden mullioned windows with horizontal glazing bars inserted in side lights. Wider central light has metal casement with small fixed light over. C18 adapted in C19. Central between upper windows a Sun firemark lacking numbered label. On Gd floor flush box sash windows with 10/10 panes under plaster drip mould. Porch plastered with battened door modern. W extension has central Gd floor door adapted as 2 light casement window with 4 panes each. W end has 2 light C18 mullioned wooden window with iron opening frame and rectangular leaded glazing on 1st floor. Door on Gd floor. E front of older house (No 98) has steep thatched roof with overhanging eaves. 2 small 2 light eaves dormers set on wall plate under thatch bonnets. Rectangular leaded glazing to all windows. 2, 3 light mullioned wooden windows of different heights but with central iron opening lights flanking the plank entrance door under drip board. Near S end similar plank door to half hipped C18 storage bay. The interior of No 98 has an inserted floor structure and a clasped purlin roof with wind braces and A-frame trusses. Interior of No 96 has exposed studs, beams and joists, with stair next W gable stack. Interesting picturesque thatched group with timber framing of 3 Periods. Part of picturesque group on S side of road.
