SS 22 SE

4/145 Philham Water Cottage

GV II

Cottage. C18 with C19 addition. Stone rubble front wall and cob rear and side
walls. Thatch roof gable to right end and hipped to left. Brick stack at gable-
end.
Plan: single room plan with fireplace in right-hand end wall and doorway towards
left-hand end. C19 outshut added at rear.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 1-window front of C19 small-paned casements.
Below 1st floor central window is an opening which has external wooden shutters. To
left is C19 plank door recessed from front wall slightly under thatch doorhood.
C19 outshut at rear.
Interior: fireplace has plain wooden lintel and cloam oven to left. Staircase in
rear left-hand corner. In the rear wall is an unusual niche with pointed head.
This is an unusual survival of a very unaltered probably squatters cottage.
