Description

DOLTON
SS 5712
14/51 Northbrook
II
House. Probably C17, possibly with earlier origins, considerably modernised in
later C20. Partly rendered cob and rubble walls. Hipped thatch roof. 3 rebuilt
small rubble stacks, 2 axial, 1 at side of rear wing.
Plan: original plan obscured by C20 alterations and modernisations but likely to
have been either a pair of cottages or 3-room-and-through-passage with lower end
probably to the left heated by stack backing onto passage, small unheated room to
centre and right-hand room heated by axial stack. The right-hand end of the house
may have been an outbuilding and has a C19 or C20 leanto against its right end. The
date of the wing behind the left-hand end is unclear but probably C19 and there is a
similar date outshut to the rear of the house.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical long 7-window front of later C20 1 and 2-light
small-paned casements. C20 open-fronted thatch roof porch towards left-hand end
with C19 plank door behind it. Leanto against right-hand end under catslide thatch
roof. Small wing behind left-hand end and outshut along rear wall.
Interior: inaccessible at time of survey.
