Description

CHULMLEIGH EAST STREET (south side),
SS 6814 -6914
Chulmleigh
7/64 Spindleberry, Kelly's and
Kethane Cottages
3.10.75 (Kelly's Cottage)
GV II
Row of 3 cottages. C16 but possibly earlier fabric survives. Painted rendered stone
rubble and cob. Thatch roof with gable ends. Stone rubble stack at left end, axial
brick stack and 2 rendered rear stacks towards right end.
Plan: as only interior of Spindleberry Cottage was available at time of survey, the
full plan and development could not be assessed. The range was occupied as 5 single
room plan cottages within living memory, reduced to 3 cottages in late C20.
Spindleberry at left end, of 2 rooms with direct entry into right-hand room and
staircase running up beside front wall of left-hand room, incorporates 2 of the
former cottages. Kelly's Cottage to the centre returns to single room plan but with
C20 flat roofed 2 storey extension to rear. Direct entry into the front room which
is heated by rear lateral stack and has staircase running up beside left-hand wall.
Kethane Cottage at the right end has been much altered in C20, and incorporates the 2
remaining cottages. The entry into the left-hand room is from the through-passage at
the left end, with direct entry into the right-hand room which is heated by rear
lateral stack. The interior of Spindleberry Cottage suggests that the left-hand room
was an early C17 addition, and that the right-hand room, Kelly's Cottage and part of
Kethane Cottage may originally have formed a single tenement possibly of 3 room and
through-passage type.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Spindleberry has 2 window range. 3 light casements, 3 panes
per light on each floor, those to upper storey are C19, those to ground floor are C20
replacements. Kelly's Cottage has single C20 3-light casement on each floor.
Kethane has 3-window range, all C20 fenestration, 3-light casements to upper storey.
3 principal doorways all have thatched hoods. Plank door to left end of Kethane
Cottage.
Interior of Spindleberry Cottage only inspected. Right-hand room has chamfered cross
ceiling beam and bressumer with keel stops. Left-hand room has ovolo moulded
fireplace lintel with deep chamfered bressumer above.
No access to roofspace but very possibly an early roof structure survives.
