Description

SS 91 NW STOODLEIGH STOODLEIGH

9/176 Barns Cottage
-

GV II

Cottage, formerly shop and cottage. Thorough early C19 remodelling of an earlier
building. Stone rubble with a thatched roof, hipped at ends, projecting right end
stack with brick shaft, probably C20 rear lateral stack.
Plan: single depth 2 room plan main block with a single-storey lean-to at the left
end and a single storey C20 rear addition. The right hand room of the main block was
formerly a shop with a shop door (since blocked) on the front; the partition between
this and the smaller left hand heated room has been removed; lean-to service room
converted to kitchen. A low cellar with a pitched stone floor suggests that the
origins of the building are pre-C19 and that the level of the road has been raised.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front with 3 gables to the front with
decorated barge boards with pendants at the apex. Plank and cover strip C19 front
door to left of centre with a thatched gabled porch; 2-light C19 or C20 casement
windows with glazing bars.
Interior: Fireplace with bread oven, stair on rear wall of left hand room.
Group value with The Old Forge.
