5/27 Silks and
- No 2, Silks Cottage
- II
Former farmhouse, now 2 cottages. Early C16, extended in Cl8. Plastered cob on
stone footings; cob or stone chimney stacks topped with Cl9 brick; thatched roof.
A 3-room and through passage plan along road with inner room to left (north-west
end). C18 extension to service end (most of No 2, Silks Cottage). The subdivision
of the property, C19 and C20 plaster and wallpaper and some added partitions hide
the original layout. Now 2-storeys throughout. 6 window front. Irregular
fenestration with Silks having Cl9 and C20 casements (most with glazing bars), and
No 2, Silks Cottage all 1983 casements. Massive lateral stack projecting from hall
and Silks front door immediately to right. The large recess at first floor level
right of the stack is thought to represent position of former 2-storey porch
projecting into the road over a now-blocked main door. Smoke-blackened roof over
hall supported on side-pegged-jointed crucks. Some original framing exposed in
roofspace. C16 moulded and stopped beams in hall. Cob-walled outshot behind hall.
Much early work is hidden particularly in Silks. Left front corner and stack
rebuilt circa 1930 and No 2, Silks Cottage renovated and enlarged in 1983.
