Cottage. Circa early C16 floored circa early C17 and extended in C18 or early C19
Rubble and cob, mostly whitewashed plaster to first floor, straw-thatched roof,
gabled to left, hipped to the right, exposed axial stack to right return with
offsets and a brick shaft, exposed lateral rubble stack at rear with a brick shaft.
Plan: a 3 room plan, the right-hand end room is a C18 or early C19 2 storey
addition. The left and central rooms are all that remains of a late medieval open
hall, possibly a church house suggested by its position backing onto the churchyard.
The right-hand of the 2 rooms has a large gable end fireplace and may be the
original lower room; the central staircase may have been inserted into the putative
passage, and the left-hand room was possibly the hall, and has a rear lateral stack.
The house probably extended to the left, and if there was an inner room it has been
demolished. Both rooms were open to the roof and heated by an open hearth fire,
although the medieval roof only survives over the right-hand room. The floor and
gable end stack were inserted into the right-hand room in circa early C17. The left
end room was probably floored later and a lateral stack built at the back, possibly
when this end reroofed C18.
Exterior: 2 storeys, asymmetrical 2 windows, 2-light C19 4-pane casements. Door
opening with divided plank door, C19 thatched porch of brick. Thatched single
storey service room to right, further C19 casement. Flat-roofed C20 addition at the
rear.
Interior: right room to ground floor with fireplace with a raised chamfered timber
lintel, chamfered cross beam with straight-cut stops, square section joists,
straight-flight staircase with reused Cl7 dog-gate at its base with splat balusters.
Left room of ground floor featureless, fireplace blocked.
Roof: There are only 2 trusses. The truss over the right side of the passage has a
mortised collar, threaded diagonal ridge-piece and also threaded purlins; it is
smoke-blackened on both sides, as is the roof over the right-hand room of the
original house, including rafters and battens, but the original thatch has been
replaced. The roof over the left-hand room has been replaced in the C18, and the
truss here has a crossed lap-jointed apex.
