House. Early - mid C17 extended in C18 and altered in C20. Rendered rubble and
cob walls. Gable ended thatch roof, hipped to rear wing. Plastered rubble stack
with brick shaft at each gable end.
Plan: originally 2-room plan, possibly with central passage. Each room had
fireplace in end wall. Larger room to right is the hall and had a newel stair
behind the stack and a 2-storey bay at the front. Unheated rear wing added in C18
for service purposes. C20 outshut built next to it. The plan was altered
slightly in the C20 by the removal of the passage and transferring the doorway
into the left-hand room.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2-window front with 2 storey hall bay to right
of centre and a C19 gabled dormer window to its left with small-paned 2-light
casement. Below to its left is a C20 2-light casement and a similar 1-light
window to the right on the ground floor. The hall bay has a C20 2-light small-
paned casement on each floor. To left of centre is an open-fronted C18 or C19
stone porch with leanto slate roof. C20 glazed door behind. Rear elevation has
wide hipped wing at centre with C20 leanto to its right and small C20 porch to its
left. Behind this is a small light to the newel stairs which are in a small
projection at the side of the house.
Interior: right-hand room has stone newel stair off it and chamfered cross beams
with keeled step stops. The fireplaces have been modernised. 1st floor not
accessible but original roof timbers may well survive.
This is a well-preserved example of a small C17 house and it retains a very
