Commercial premises. Late C19. Stuccoed brick with ashlar dressings; roof not
visible. 3 storeys, 3 bays. Elaborate ashlar shop front has: round-arched door-
way (with late C20 door) on left and round-arched window on right, flanking wider
central window which is square-headed with rounded top corners (both windows late
C20 plate glass); the bays are defined by panelled and fluted pilasters with
decorative capitals set on tall plinth which, below windows has raised and fielded
panels broken by lozenges; the pilasters support entablature, the frieze of which
is covered by 1980s fascia board; above cornice is balustrade, having central panel
with anthemion and floral decoration under swan's-neck pediment with fruit swag
below and ball on cushion finial above. On upper floors, bays are defined by giant
pilasters broken by cornices (paired to each floor); pilasters flanking central
bay rise to break through parapet, flanking paired blind panels and supporting
triangular pediment; to either side the coped parapet is treated as a broken swan's-
neck pediment, the outer pilasters with ball on cushion finials. First and second
floor windows are sashes, wider to centre, having small-pane upper sashes, single-
pane lower sashes and all with ashlar architraves, those on first floor having
floating triangular pediments. End stack to right. No 506 was built as part of
a row of similar buildings, the others now demolished or much altered.
