II
Terrace of 5 houses. 1899, by J.H. Brewerton for the Rev. H. Ebben. Brick, rendered above ground-floor level with brickwork left exposed to quoining flanking corner tower; cross-gabled plain tile roof, with C20 replacement tiles to Nos 445 and 449; brick stacks. Double-depth plans. 3 storeys with attic. All elevations in Free Style, with paired Flemish gables flanking tower at corner with Wharncliffe Road; rest of Christchurch Road elevation has Flemish-gabled bays alternating with bays roofed parallel to street and with brackets to broad projecting eaves; the broad stacks are an important part of this composition. Christchurch Road elevation of 3:2:2:2:2 fenestration with floating cornices above 2-light attic casements and paired sashes with glazing bars (2x2-pane) to upper sashes; plate-glass windows with top-hung 8-pane lights to canted 2-storey bay windows and above doorways. Half-glazed doors with overlights set behind open porches with Tuscan columns to nowy-headed pediments; 3-light casements to nowy-headed dormers. Similar fenestration to corner tower and to Flemish-gabled 2-window return facing Wharncliffe Road. Interior not inspected. An early and notable example of the application of free style design to Domestic Revival architecture.
