Description

ST 7814 STURMINSTER NEWTON
MARKET CROSS (WEST SIDE)

8/157 The White Hart Hotel
4.10.60
G.V. II

Inn, dated 1708 but may be earlier. Heavily colour-washed brick, stone quoins,
thatched roof hipped to the right. 2 storeys and attic, 6 window range. The
ground floor has 3 canted bays with glazing bars, probably of the C19. To the
left is a passage to the rear with a large lintel. The door has segmental
hood on shaped brackets. Above the passage the first floor has been partially
set into the roof by an eyebrow dormer. This part has a 5-light wooden casement
in a wooden frame. All other first floor windows are of 3 lights in wooden
frames with centrally opening iron casements with leaded-lights. In the roof
are 2 dormers having 2-light wooden casement windows with leaded-lights.
Internally, the building is much altered but deep chamfered ceiling beams are
visible. A date stone reads "RWM 1708". "RCHM, Dorset, Vol III", HMSO, 1970,
p 279, no 17.
