Description

WOBURN
SP-9632-9732 WOBURN PARK
10/147 Statue of Adonis (formerly listed
23.1.61 under Sculptural groups in Woburn
GV II Abbey Courtyard)
Statue. Circa 1700 by J V Legterin (floruit 1685-1708). Ashlar, blackened at
a later date (probably to disguise the repairs in marble) to imitate lead.
Stands on rectangular ashlar plinth with moulded base and cap. Statue and
plinth together stand approximately 3 metres high. Depicts standing figure of
Adonis with putto at L heel. Holds remains of something in R hand (probably a
bow) and has quiver on L. Forms a group with items 10/145, 10/146 and 10/148,
which depict Diana, Juno and Apollo.
