CHITTLEHAMPTON
SS 62 SE

4/75 Brodenhill Cottage

-
- II

Cottage, divided probably in C19 into 2 cottages, now reverted to single occupation.
Probably late C17. Roughcast rendered stone rubble and cob. Bitumenized slate roof
with gable ends. Rendered stack with tapered cap at left gable end and lateral
rendered stack with tapered cap to rear right-hand end.
Plan not fully recoverable as interior not accessible but may consist of a
remodelled small 3-room and cross passage plan with hall heated by rear lateral
stack and inner room heated by gable end stack to left of passage. Probably in C19,
when the cottage was divided into 2 occupations, a direct entry was made into inner
room, a gable-ended 2-storey service wing was added to rear left end, and a 2-storey
leanto added at the lower end, with a lofted outshut to rear.
2 storeys. Left-hand side attempts symmetry with two 2-light casements 2 panes per
light on each floor flanking porch with concrete tiled gabled roof. C19 plank door.
Right side has plank door with a 2-light casement 3 panes per light to upper storey
of leanto. Plank door flanked by 4-paned windows at right end of leanto. Loft door
over plank door to lower end of rear outshut.
Interior not accessible.
