Originally built in 1737 Askerswell House burnt down and was rebuilt in 1849.
The new Askerswell House was designed by the Victorian Era architect John Hicks.
Sometime between 1842 and 1844, Rev. Alfred Cox, his wife Selina and their children, Alfred Jnr (10), William (8) and Clara (1) moved into Askerswell House from Hoxne Suffolk.
They lived in the original house for 6 years up until it was destroyed by fire, then a further 17 years in the new residence, until Alfred’s death in 1866.
In 1941 Askerswell House was requisitioned for the war effort and used as a prisoner of war camp for German Soldiers.
In the stable block, a swastika carved by one of the prisoners into a timber beam of the loft remains to this day.
The property is now privately owned.
