Pair of Estate Cottages. Mid C19 for Brancepeth Estate. Squared sandstone
in narrow courses with ashlar dressings. Fishscale Welsh slate roof. Dressed
stone chimney stacks. Tudor style. One storey plus-attic. Each cottage 2
bays with No. 1 at left. Flush quoins and chamfered plinth. End vertical-
panelled doors, with narrow overlights, in chamfered surrounds under hoodmoulds.
Stone-mullioned windows. No. 1 has square bay window of 3 lights under hipped
roof, on ground floor, and gabled dormer with 2-light window under hoodmould.
No. 2 has wide projecting gabled left bay with canted bay window under hipped
roof on ground floor and 2-light window under hoodmould above. Stone eaves
brackets. Steeply-pitched roof with coped gables and shaped kneelers.
Central transverse chimney with cornice and 3 diagonals tacks. 1986 addition
in similar style on rear of No. 1 is not of interest. Nos. 1 and 2 form a
symmetrical pair with Nos. 3 and 4 (q.v.).
