SJ 37 SW SHOTWICK C.P. THE VILLAGE
3/52 Woodbine Cottage.
Formerly farmhouse, now house: C16 or earlier origins, late C17
exterior but remodelled and upper storey raised early-mid C19. Washed
English bond orange brick on stone plinth, cob walling internally.
Welsh slate roof, 2 gable brick chimneys. 2-room plan, 2-storey
symmetrical 3-bay front. Broad dentil brick band at 1st floor and
dentil cornice. End bays have deep 12-pane sashes below, horned
sashes above. Central bay has trellis porch in front of moulded
surround to partly glazed C20 door. Right end has small-pane iron
casement with intersecting tracery.
Interior: Ground storey has cob walling surviving from original
1-storey house. Heavy ceiling beams rest on depressions in rear wall
plate and are hung from window lintel to front. Some 3-board and
2-panelled doors with fielded panels, with unusual brass spring
latches upstairs. Simple dog-leg staircase with plain baluster.
Perhaps the unique example of cob walling surviving in Cheshire.
