AMESBURY FLOWER LANE SU 1541 11/278 Limetree Cottage including stables adjoining south GV II

Small house and attached stables. Probably early to mid C17, refronted with raised eaves in circa early C19 and extended at rear in late C20. Stables added in circa early to mid C19. Plastered timber box-frame. Concrete tile roof with gabled ends. Brick stack at right end. Stables flint and brick with brick dress- ings and gable-ended slate roof. Plan: 2-bay box-frame, 2-room plan, further narrow bay at right end possibly originally part of No 16 Salisbury Road (qv) but now contains stack serving right hand room and winder staircase. The left room's gable end stack replaced by late C20 staircase. Late C20 extension at rear and circa early to mid c19 stable at left (south) end. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2-window front. 2-light C19 metal-frame casements with small panes on first floor; ground floor left replaced by C20 casement and ground floor right large C20 bay window incorporating central porch with C20 door. Late C20 2-storey extension at rear, rendered and with lean-to roof. Stables attached left (south), 2-storeys, doorway on right with C20 porch, central loft doorway with plank door flanked by C20 casements. Interior: Right hand room has large chamfered stone fireplace with Tudor arch, brick inside with niche and timber bressummer above; chamfered axial beam with bar stops and chamfered joists with step and ogee stops. Left hand room has chamfered axial beam with step stops and unchamfered joists. Winder staircase with chamfered newel and balustrade at top with wavy splat balusters. C20 joinery. Posts of box-frame have no joists. Large clasped side purlins with simple bladed scarfs. Only truss is closed truss at centre and roof above collar has been replaced, but it appears to have been of common rafter type like No 16 Salisbury Road qv. Source: RCHME, NBR report 50110.
