VILLAGE GREEN
(west side, off)
Green Cottage (formerly listed as Metcalfe's)

GV
II

House. C17 and later. Rubble, graduated thin stone slate roof. 2 storeys,
2 bays. Quoins. The right bay projects as a 2-storey outshut with 2 ground
floor windows. Lean-to porch to left bay, with large slightly projecting
stack to its left; another stack to ridge, right. Left return: A 3-light
recessed chamfered mullioned window to each floor; hoodmould to ground
floor. Ball finial to gable. Interior not inspected at re-survey but
reported to contain no original features (1986). Probably the left bay is
all that is left of a larger C17 house, the right bay being a later
addition; the mullion windows would have been on the front of the house,
the rest of which would have extended further to the left. Alternatively,
the Cl7 bay may have been a projecting parlour wing. Yorkshire Vernacular
Buildings Study Group, Report No. 1111, 1986.
