Description

SOWERBY BRIDGE BOOTH HOUSE ROAD SE 0205-0325 (south side), Luddenden Foot 6/10 Hand Carr Farmhouse and Hand Carr Farm 15.11.66 - II Farmhouse, now 2 dwellings. Dated 'ESS 1640', roof raised later C17, C19 and C20 additions. 2 storeys, 4 bays with continuous front outshut and through passage, C19 added bay to left (east) end. North front: main range: roof comes down low over outshut. From left: C20 wing not of special interest; moulded doorway has ogee-moulded, sunk-spandrelled lintel with date panel, hoodmould with floral stops and internal porch with stone benches and inner stop-chamfered shallow-basket-arched doorway; 2-light chamfered mullion window; similar window with mullion removed; inserted doorway (replacing 2-light Window). Shaped kneeler to left. Skylight. Corniced ashlar stack to right end and brick ridge stack above door. Converted attached barn not of interest. Rear: from left: on ground floor a 5-light, a 6-light and a 2-light double-chamfered mullion window, a 3-light chamfered mullion window and a chamfered quoined doorway in c1970 stone and glass porch, all under continuous dripmould with heart-and-diamond stops. On first floor larger blocks of stone above cill level and two 4-light and two 2-light, now 1-light chamfered mullion windows. Added bay on right has plain gutter brackets and eaves stack on right. Left return: the gable of the old house has a C20 window using the jambs of a chamfered window, and a former chamfered window above. Interior: outshut to right of porch has a chamfered wall post and wall plate; right end wall of outshut has former floor into barn; house body has stop-chamfered spine beams with splicing indicating presence of former bressumer and firehood, and a later tall stone fireplace with chamfered ledge. Several of the external decorative features and the initials on the datestone are the same as those at Upper Foot Farmhouse, Burnley Road (qv).
