For many years it was a place of rest and contemplation for inmates and staff at the asylum, (Stanley Royd mental hospital), which was closed in 1996. The church, which closed in 1995, is currently still up for sale in 2011. It is showing increasing signs of vandalism, including the damaged roof, caused by a fire.
