GV II
Pair of attached houses. Circa late C18 - early C19, with some C20 alterations and
additions. Slatestone rubble with brick dressings. Partly rendered and partly
slate-hung with rag slates. Hipped slate roof with ridge tiles. Axial stack with
brick shaft, end stack to right with rendered shaft; there would have been a stack at
the left end, now removed.
Plan: Pair of attached houses, with Western Cottage to left and Eastern Cottage to
right. Each house is of 2-room plan, with central entrances. The inner rooms are
heated from back-to-back fireplaces from the axial stack, with the outer rooms heated
from end stacks. There is a small single storey outshut at each end, probably of
later C19.
Exterior: 2 storeys; overall a symmetrical 4-window front, with each house having a
symmetrical 2-window front. All windows are C20 2-light 8-pane casements with
cambered stone arches and keystones, at ground and first floor to left and right of
the doorway. Western Cottage, to left, has central C20 half-glazed door with gabled
hood on wooden posts. Eastern Cottage, to right, has central C20 4-panelled door
with gabled hood on brackets. To end left there is a single storey outshut with
hipped roof, C20 2-light 6-pane casement and C20 half-glazed door. To end right
there is a single storey outhouse, with half-hipped roof, rendered, with C20 door and
6-pane window. At the rear, Western Cottage is rendered, with C20 2-light 8-pane
casements at first floor and one at ground floor to right. The rear of Eastern
Cottage is slate-hung with rag slates; at ground floor to left a C20 2-light 8-pane
casement, two similar 2-light casements at first floor.
