Originally this was the Queen's Head Public House, property of the Younghusband family in the early nineteenth century. William Wordsworth stayed here in 1803, as did Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins in 1859, by which time the proprietor was Joseph Porter, although it may still have been the property of the Younghusband's descendents. It was purchased by Dr. Robert Henry Mortlock in around 1894. Ownership passed to his widow, Kate Caroline Mortlock, on his death in 1900. At the time it was still a working Inn, but became a private house under the name Hilmallock before the 1911 census. It is now known as Dickens House.
