Description

SW 72 NE MAWNAN DURGAN

9/203 No 1, Beach Cottage and Quay
- Cottage, including quay walls

GV II

Pair of estate cottages and quay walls. Circa 1870s. Base of quay walls probably
C18. Roughly coursed faced Killas with granite dressings. Quay walls are
vertically-set Killas rubble with horizontally-coursed Killas rubble over dry
Delabole slate roof with fish scale courses and projecting eaves and verges. Gabled
dormers at front and rear. Central axial brick chinmey over the cross party wall.
Plan: Double-depth-plan pair of identical cottages each with a reception room at the
front; axial passages from doorways to the middle of either end linked to cross
passages between the rear service rooms of each cottage.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 2 window south-east front without doorways. First
floor windows are gabled dormers with brick verges and shallow pointed granite arches
over the windows. Original casement windows with glazing bars. Each end has a
central doorway with a slate hood on chamfered brackets over and arched window to the
middle of each gable. Ledged doors. Rear has similarly detailed features and is
unaltered.
Interior: Not inspected.
The cottages are built at the rear of an irregularly shaped peninsular quay with quay
walls on 3 sides. The walls were heightened in the C19 to form garden walls for the
cottages. These walls have square-edged granite copings.
