House, now convent. Mid C19. Pink killas ashlar (side walls of rubble brought to
courses) with granite ashlar quoins and dressings, slurried slate roof. Rectangular
plan. Two storeys and 3x3 bays, symmetrical; plinth, raised rusticated quoins; the
south front has a wide pedimented centre breaking forwards, with a prominent
canted bay window at ground floor and a tripartite sashed window above, both
these with pilastered architraves and cornices on consoles; the outer bays have
large pedimented architraves to the ground floor windows, with similar consoles,
and raised plain architraves to the windows above; all these windows are sashed
and have unusual glazing, with one horizontal glazing bar in each leaf. The
entrance front to the east has a large rectangular porch in similar style in the
centre, with panelled outer door, large overlight, round-headed side windows, and
segmental-headed inner door with side windows, in matching style, and otherwise
matching fenestration. Hipped roof with projecting eaves, ridge chimney. Interior:
fine curved dog-legged staircase with slender colonette balusters; otherwise, not
inspected. History: built by the Penrose family.
