Monumental sarcophagus. Commemorates John Pendarves Basset (d.1739). Grey
marble with white marble tablets. Four moulded feet, steeply angled sides and
ends, bolection-moulded top, lid with rounded ends, moulded rim, and humped
upper surface with a ball finial. Attached to the north end is a cartouche, and
to the sides large lettered panels, that on the north side inscribed:-
JOHN PENDARVES BASSET
died six of Sept. MDCCXXXIX
aged xxv years
followed by a lengthy epitaph which continues on the south side. The south panel
is cracked near the bottom edge, and the lettering on both is heavily weathered.
