TF 48 NE THEDDLETHORPE MAIN ROAD ST. HELENS (east side) 2/48 Church of St.Helen 9.3.67 II* Parish church. C14, C15. Chancel and aisles rebuilt 1866 by S. S. Teulon. Squared greenstone rubble, random mixed rubble, limestone dressings, slate roofs. C15 western tower, nave with clerestory, aisles, south porch, chancel and vestry. The 3 stage tower has 2 string courses, battlemented parapets with plain corner pinnacles and stepped corner buttresses. The belfry stage has paired trefoil headed lights with quatrefoils, concave chamfered surrounds and hood mould. The C19 west window is of 3 lights with cusped heads and panel tracery having concave surround and moulded hood. Above is a slate faced C19 clock in moulded square surround. On the north side of the tower is a stone toilet block. The C19 north aisle has a west window of 2 lights, cusped heads, quatrefoil and hood, in the north wall is a similar window, a pointed doorway and a 3 light window with ogee heads and cambered arch. Beyond is a C19 vestry with pointed doorway and paired lancets to north and east walls. The C14 nave clerestory has 3 paired ogee headed lights with quatrefoils and concave surrounds, with 4 similar to south. The east chancel window is of 3 lights with cusped heads and panel tracery. The south wall has 2 windows with paired cusped lights and panel tracery. The east window of the south aisle is of 3 trefoil headed lights with cambered arch. The 2 windows in the south wall match those on the north side, and beyond the porch is a further 2 light window and in the west wall a window of 3 lights. The gabled south porch has a moulded outer arch with pointed cusped side lights. The semi-circular headed inner doorway is plainly moulded. Interior. The north arcade of 3 bays, the south of 4, are C14 with octagonal shafts and responds, moulded capitals and double chamfered arches. The tall C15 pointed tower arch has concave moulded responds and carved capitals with fleurons. The C14 double chamfered chancel arch springs from C19 carved corbels. In the north aisle is an unusual late C14 carved stone reredos consisting of a recessed central triangular headed panel with cusping. The cill, jambs and top are all carved with fleurons and other motifs. Above the centre is a crocketed gable containing a trefoil, the broken pinnacles of which bears a crucifix. To either side of the top of the frame are supporting human head corbels. Smaller human heads and figures appear in the decoration. In the chancel a C19 vestry door and ogee headed niche. All fittings including carved screen are C19 or C20. The font base is also C20, but the bowl is probably recut C14 work. At the east end of the nave are 2 late C18 marble wall plaques to the memory of the Cracroft Marshall family.
